Two out-of-work salesmen, lacking the digital-savvy skills they need to find jobs, sign on as interns at a high-tech company. While their new assignment may give them the training they need, it also means staying one step ahead of their ignorance.
Over the years, Vince Vaughn has had many successful comedic matchups – Ben Stiller in Dodgeball, Will Ferrel in Old School – but none quite as fun as Owen Wilson in Wedding Crashers. The two have completely opposite comic styles, Vince is all fast-talking wisecracks and winks, Owen is laid back and slow-talking, but somehow they fit perfectly together. And they’re never as great to watch as when they are playing the underdogs.
Which is exactly what they are in The Internship movie for iPad. Eight years after Wedding Crashers the two are back together to star in this comedy, which has a story concept by Vince Vaughn, who also co-wrote the script. They play salesmen Billy and Nick, who are unbeatable at wining and dining and selling watches to their clients. But when their company goes under, their boss (John Goodman) lets them go, and the two are left trying to figure out their next step. Billy comes up with the idea of interning at Google, competing against a hundred or so smart kids for the chance at a job with the dream tech company.
Their positivity during their video interview sees them get into the program, and matched with an intern team to compete in several challenges. None of the other kids are happy about them being at Google, particularly Graham (Max Minghella) who thinks they don’t belong because they know nothing about coding, programming or anything else to do with a computer. He’d be right about that, and it’s one of the many things the audience needs to suspend their belief about. Meanwhile Nick is trying to woo a serious but smart Google executive (Rose Byrne) with not much luck, though I think you can guess what will happen in the end.
